CANAL EXPANSION NAMED BEST CONSTRUCTION PROJECT IN THE WORLD
PANAMA CITY, Panama, August 01, 2007 - The
Republic of Panama is honored to receive the prestigious Samoter 2008
"Best Construction Project in the World" award for the Panama
Canal expansion.
The Samoter International Award honors
those that contribute to the development of construction at both national and
international levels. The official ceremony and presentation of the 2008 award
will take place in Verona, Italy, on March 5, 2008.
"We are honored by this
recognition and I share this with the best asset of the Canal - our hard-working
world-class work force. Our mandate from the Panamanian people last October was
clear - they are for the expansion of the Canal; and, we are already making
great progress with the project and look forward to its continued
success," said ACP Administrator/CEO Alberto Alemán Zubieta.
Expansion will build a new lane of
traffic along the Panama Canal through the construction of a new set of locks,
which will double capacity and allow more traffic and longer, wider ships.
The Samoter International Award is a highly-regarded and sought-after global honor assigned by Verona Fiere since 1973 to distinguished figures whose work on behalf of development and success in building and site activity, has helped consolidate major entrepreneurial systems on an economic and social scale. The Award may be granted to a country, a public or private company or a machine builder or draftsman

provide accurate ETA information in a timely manner .
PANAMA CANAL PRESENTS EXPANSION PROGRAM TO
INTERNATIONAL FINANCIAL MARKETS
NEW
YORK, NY, July 24, 2007 -
Continuing to move forward with expansion plans, Panama Canal executives
presented the Canal's Expansion Program to international financial institutions
on July 23rd. Panama
Canal Authority (ACP) Administrator/CEO Alberto Alemán Zubieta provided a
snapshot of the Republic of Panama, the Canal's operational achievements and
increase in capacity through continuous improvements and modernization work. He
also outlined the progress made on expansion, highlighting the excellent
financials of a Canal that is debt-free with revenues reaching $1.7 billion in
2007.
"What we are doing is tapping the
market as we determine the best financial package for financing the Canal's
Expansion Program. Our main goal is to understand the alternatives we have and
weigh the pros and cons in terms of financing. And we are very pleased with the
interest of the market and we hope to continue our dialogue with them in the
coming months," said Alberto Alemán.
More than 100 people representing financial
institutions from the United States, Asia, Europe and the Americas participated
in the presentation, consisting of investment and commercial banks,
multilateral institutions and credit rating agencies. Banks with branches in
Panama were also present during the event.
"To date, the ACP has been
conducting meetings with banks now numbering to about 60 - a process which
began in Panama. We have much room for flexibility and we would like to hear
from the market based on the financial requirements we have outlined,"
said ACP CFO and Deputy Administrator José Barrios Ng.
In the coming months, ACP will be
conducting meetings with interested banks and will continue to update them
about the Expansion Program of the Canal.
Expansion will build a new lane of
traffic along the Panama Canal through the construction of a new set of locks,
which will double capacity and allow more traffic and longer, wider ships.
